Financial Times - Meaning at Work
11th Jan 2006 @ 1.33pmNice to see The Storytellers mentioned recently in Richard Donkin’s column in the FT, with his view of the importance of Meaning at work.
Richard quite rightly points out in his article that quite often staff really do go the extra mile to provide great service and show their commitment to the companies they work for. However, whether they are always recognised for their efforts, or singled out as an example of what commitment to the job really looks and feels like, is another matter entirely.
It goes without saying that pay and tangible benefits play a part in motivating people, but so too is a simple ‘thank-you’, and a show of appreciation. And tell a story to someone else about that person’s positive attitude and the effort they have put in, and you can find yourself with a workforce which is suddenly upright and listening, and want to demonstrate their own attitude and commitment. A workforce that’s engaged. Keep telling and sharing those stories, and you can sustain that engagement for an indefinite period of time. Back to what we do best!
