‘Ah, Now I Get It!’
3rd Jun 2005 @ 5.05pmMartin and I have recently spent time on the Aurora at 2005’s HR Forum, where Martin’s entertaining presentation on employee engagement through storytelling went down a storm, judging by the feedback he received.
Our ‘Ten Rules of Engagement’ formed the basis of the presentation, setting the scene and indicating the optimum conditions for successful employee engagement. These ‘rules’ include the need for simplicity, clarity, relevance, leadership alignment, creating a dialogue, personal experience, knowledge-sharing and the sharing of success stories to keep the drumbeat going… And of course, how to use real, human stories which inspire, bring messages to life and give meaning to the dry phraseology which peppers conventional strategic communications.
And when it comes to presenting in an engaging way, we like to practise what we preach. With not a bullet point in sight, Martin made full use of our carefully crafted models (employer, employee, cannons - you get the picture) with more than a dash of humour and theatre. His fluorescent feathered skewers representing the traditional internal communications channels of e-mail, monthly newsletters etc, were plunged with much drama into a box containing the hapless employee (all missing their mark of course, just to get the message across!). Never let it be said that his love of theatre and compelling presentation doesn’t come across immediately!
Of course we’d like to share these Ten Rules of Engagement with you, so let us know if that sounds like a good idea to you.
